LIFE: SWITCHING OFF AT SOPWELL HOUSE

A mini-break doesn’t have to break the bank.

I often think the price of a couple of nights in a boutique hotel in the UK isn’t too far off an all-inclusive week in the sun.

But Sopwell House in St Albans is the perfect example of a luxurious country escape without the hefty price tag.

We arrived on a Friday and I booked into a yoga class (guests can attend any classes free of charge), which was followed by a quick swim and sauna before dinner in the brasserie (sweet potato and quinoa salad, butternut squash risotto and mango cheesecake, all of which were superb).

After dinner, we spent the rest of the evening in the cocktail lounge sipping cosmos, before spending the night in one of the enormous beds.

Rooms are an interiors dream; thick, spongy carpets, stylish black bathrooms and views over the garden.

So if you need a place where you have permission to spend all day in a Jacuzzi, all evening in the cocktail bar, or simply banish burnout, a trip to Sopwell House is exactly what you need.
